Chinese Language and Cultural Studies ​

Delivered by NTU's Confucius Institute, this track is designed to equip students with basic Chinese Language skills as well as to expose them to the 5000-year-old Chinese history. It consists of 2 parts: Chinese Language and Chinese Cultural studies. It will be conducted over 4 weeks in July 2018, Mondays to Fridays, 9.30am to 5.00pm, at the NTU Yunnan Campus. The Chinese language course is specially designed for students with little or no background on the language to gain insights into the Chinese language. The course contents are topic-based and help students to master basic conversational skills for daily usage. Basic reading and writing skills are also introduced to help students accumulate Chinese vocabulary and enhance their learning of the Chinese language. Through an experiential learning approach, students will have to perform several assigned activities to enhance their learning and understanding of the language. At the end of the course, students will be able to: Understand and construct simple phrases Conduct basic conversations Write basic strokes, character components and single component characters. Learn up to 260 Chinese characters, 40 grammatical points and 300 commonly-used sentences. ​The Chinese Cultural Studies course aims to expose exchange students to the interesting yet unique aspects of the Chinese culture found in Singapore. Students can enhance their knowledge of Singapore's Chinese Culture by understanding the developments of Chinese history in South East Asia and the aesthetic aspects of Chinese calligraphy, Chinese paper-cutting and Traditional Chinese Medicine. As Singapore is a melting pot of the East and the West, students in this course will also be introduced to the Malay, Indian and other cultures to help them better appreciate multi-cultural Singapore. Some field trips (e.g. to selected places of interest which has significant Chinese cultural heritage) will also be conducted to further one's appreciation for the Chinese culture.

- be currently enrolled in an accredited college or university which has an exchange agreement with NTU
- achieve a minimum GPA requirement of 3.0/5.0
- be nominated by your home university to come on exchange with NTU. Non-nominated students may apply on fee-paying basis.
- be proficient in the English language
